Last week, Congressman Ellison held a forum to discuss the importance of protecting women's rights in this age of extremism. Women’s issues are not solely the responsibility of women, but we need all parts of humanity standing up for the rights of women. While some politicians may try to marginalize women, we all have mothers and therefore must work to protect their rights.
Some of the key headlines in this war on women have come from the battle to defund Planned Parenthood. Tim Stanley of Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota reminded us of the gut-wrenching attacks on women's healthcare in America. And that these radicals will go so far as to hold American prosperity hostage solely because they don't like Planned Parenthoods mission. Planned Parenthood provides comprehensive medical care and education that is often out of reach for poor women. They believe that access to health care is fundamental to personal aspirations, self-determination, and fundamental to a just society. Former state Senator Tarryl Clark reminded us that prior to the Affordable Care Act, you may be rejected for health insurance solely on the basis of having the ‘pre-existing’ condition of being a women.
This war on women has continued with legislators moves to cut back family planning, eliminate social security and medicare, redefine rape and demonize public workers (60% are women). Congressman Ellison has a vision of an America where people regardless of race, sex or orientation are all equal – where America works for working people. When women’s rights are attacked they are really attacking a family’s prosperity. When women get paid less for the same job, they are taking money from that family’s table. These attacks demonstrate that there are still people that believe that women should only work in the kitchen. We are offended and will fight to bring about the politics and policies that foster generosity and human dignity.
Thanks to Congressman Ellison for hosting the forum!
